Artist Statement
For most of us when we think of steel we think of a fortifier, something strong, cold, and lifeless used to build towering skyscrapers, massive bridges, and monumental sea going vessels. The creative process allows me to use the powerfully strong qualities of steel to share human emotions and expressions such as sadness, joy, fear, and even the warmth of a smile. In my artwork, I try to create highly detailed and dynamic sculpture that often includes interactive cycles, multiple layers, and dimensions.
When I begin working on a piece of steel, knowing the longevity of the material has a huge effect on my process. I not only consider the impact of the contemporary viewer, but those that may see the work hundreds of years into the future. Will the same concept still be valid? Will our current struggles still exist? in my piece, Because of Skin , it is my hope that future generations will not initially connect with the concept behind this piece as our society and culture will have progressed beyond issues of race. As an artist I feel art can be very powerful when addressing issues such as racism, social injustices, are protecting our environment, all issues I ,like to cover in my work however I prefer to do it in way not to shock but to make a person stop and think!
